The race of having the fastest computer on earth is still going. Now the Energy Department at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tenessee has the fastest, and probably one of the most expensive, computers in the planet.
However, you may be asking, how fast is fast? Well, just to give you an indication of the speed of your computer at home. If you have an Intel i7 6950X processor, the computer is capable of processing around 320,00 MIPS (Millions of Instructions Per Seconds).
Now this new computer, built by IBM, can conduct more than 200 quadrillion calculations per seconds. How much is a quadrillion? Well, it is “a number” followed by 18 zeros… That’s a lot of zeros!
Up to this point, the most powerful computer on earth has been the Sunway TaihuLight in China.
You may be asking yourself, why do we need that type of computer? Well, that computer will be used for energy research, scientific discovery, economic competitiveness, and national security.
If you keep in mind that every day 205 billion emails are sent daily, meaning 2.4 million emails sent every second, we may need fast computers to process them for spam, malware, threat intelligence and so on.
Be safe out there, until next Malware Monday.
