We have discussed a large number of Ransomware attacks, most recently about a Victorian Hospital that was hacked by Ransomware right here in Melbourne, and they are only growing in numbers.
As a refresher, Ransomware is a type of Malware that encrypts your files and holds them for ransom, hence the name. The only way that they will decrypt your files is if you pay their ransom. But that may change, as a decryptor tool was recently released to the public, and it’s completely free.
Now hang on, before jumping straight into the point let me tell you that this free tool is only for one variant of Ransomware called ZQ Ransomware. You should know that there are many variants out there, and this is only one of them.
However, bear this in mind if you get infected by this type of ransomware in the future, you will be able to decrypt your files for free without paying a ransom! This does not mean that you no longer have to take backup procedures, but it does help.
This was created by security experts at Emisisoft, who have released the free decryptor tool that allows people to decrypt files that have been encrypted by ransomware for free.
The ZQ ransomware encrypts victim’s files using some encryption algorithms. The malware adds the extension “.[firstname.lastname@example.org].zq” to the encrypted files, thereby decrypting them.
Remember, even now that you have one decryptor for this type of ransomware, keep practising security hygiene when using the internet, backing up files, using a password to lock your accounts, using multi-factor authentication and so on.
And as always, be safe out there, until next Malware Monday.
