Microsoft Windows 7 Is Shutting Down, Now What?

After 10 years, Microsoft is finally sunsetting Windows 7. This means that Windows 7 will no longer be updated, and from January 14th 2020, Microsoft will no longer offer support for the product.

What does no support for Windows 7 mean?

‘No Support’ means that after January 14, 2020, your computer will still function but Microsoft will no longer provide the following:

  • Technical support for any issues
  • Software updates
  • Security updates or fixes

According to Microsoft, “While you could continue to use your PC running Windows 7, without continued software and security updates, it will be subject to increasing risk of viruses and malware. Going forward, the best way for you to stay secure is on Windows 10 which is constantly supported and updated with the latest security measures.”

While it is possible to install Windows 10 on your older device, Calibre One recommends that it is usually more effective to replace these older systems with one designed for a more modern operating system.

Upgrade or Replace?

While Windows 7 will technically continue to work, being unsupported leaves you vulnerable. Further, its increasingly apparent that other software vendors are now longer guaranteeing that their software will work on older versions of Windows. You could do an update on your application and suddenly find it won’t operate anymore, leaving you unable to work.

At Calibre One, we think that most machines still running Windows 7 in a business environment are likely overdue for replacement. Rather than upgrade the operating system in situ, we suggest you take the opportunity to replace these machines with new systems designed for Windows 10. This will provide a less disruptive and smoother transition.
